Coronation of the Virgin
(San Marco Altarpiece) 1490-1492
Tempera on panel, 378 x 258 cm
Sandro Botticelli – Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence
Botticelli’s altarpiece was painted for a chapel in the church of San Marco, the Dominican monastery in Florence. It was commissioned by a guild of goldsmiths responsible for maintaining the church, for the their own chapel dedicated to Saint Eligius, the patron of goldsmiths. Thus Botticelli makes copious use of gold in the upper part of the painting, which shows the Virgin Mary kneeling before God, surrounded by the heads of seraphs and cherubs, and with angels dancing before them on the clouds. Standing on the earth below the heavenly clouds are four saints: Saint John the Baptist, Saint Augustine, Saint Jerome, and Saint Eligius.

O God, who made the Mother of your Son
to be our Mother and our Queen,
graciously grant that, sustained by her intercession,
we may attain in the heavenly Kingdom
the glory promised to your children.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. +Amen.
