Conference of Major Superiors of Women Religious sponsor Eucharistic Congress at National Shrine – September 25, 2004
About 3,000 people attended the closing Mass of a Eucharistic Congress, "Heaven Unites with Earth," at the National Shrine (Basilica of the Immaculate Conception) in Washington DC September 25, sponsored by the Conference of Major Superiors of Women Religious.
Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, was the main celebrant.and homilist. (Read Cardinal Arinze’s Homily on this site). Concelebrating the Mass were: Cardinal McCarrick; Cardinal William Keeler of Baltimore; Cardinal Francis Stafford of the Apostolic Penitentiary; Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport; Bishop Daniel DiNardo, coadjutor of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston; and dozens of archdiocesan and religious priests.
The evening liturgy concluded two days of Masses, Eucharistic processions, adoration, Benediction, speakers, and workshops. Speaking on the topic of the Eucharist also included Sister Nirmala, superior general of the Missionaries of Charity.

England-Wales Bishop Conference
Bishops’ Conference to publish materials for Year of the Eucharist – October 2004
….Resources to assist the Church in England and Wales keep the Year by deepening its love and understanding of the Eucharist are to be published by the Bishops’ Conference and the Liturgy Office of the Bishops’ Conference.
To assist parishes with their understanding and celebration of the Mass the Bishops’ Conference will publish early in 2005 the English translation of the General Instruction to the Roman Missal, together with complementary resources.
The first materials to be published will be a series of resources to promote times of liturgical prayer and reflection before the Blessed Sacrament. These focus on different dimensions of the Eucharistic Mystery, connecting them with different intentions of the Cycle of Prayer for England and Wales. They will be accompanied by simple guidance notes for the celebration of the Rite of Exposition, and the Rite of Exposition and Benediction.
These first (free) resources are all available to be downloaded from the Liturgy Office website (www.liturgyoffice.org.uk/Resources). They may be freely reproduced, so long as they are not made available for sale and the copyright details are not altered.

Seven Conclusions of International Eucharistic Congress
Cardinal Jozef Tomko, Pope John Paul II’s legate to the International Eucharistic Congress held in Guadalajara, Mexico, presented seven conclusions of the Congress. The proposals for action summarized the ideas that arose from the theological pastoral symposium held earlier, and reflections of the various linguistic groups approved at the end of the Congress on October 16., 2004
The seven conclusions are:
1. It is urgent to emphasize the importance of Sunday Mass, central part of
the congress.
2. The feast and procession of Corpus Christi (the Body and Blood of Christ)
must be emphasized again.
3. Eucharistic adoration in all its forms must be revalued, including
nocturnal adoration.
4. Emphasize the importance of frequent and worthy Communion, coupled with
the sacrament of reconciliation.
5. Encourage the spirit of mission, which stems from the Eucharist.
6. Share one’s table and Mass with the poor, in the service of charity.
Combine spiritual commitment with the need of the poor.
7. Renew faith, sacrifice, communion and service in the Eucharist, as a sign
for the Catholic Church and the world.

HONG KONG – October 24, 2004
"More than 10,000 Catholics in Hong Kong took part, yesterday, October 24th, in the Eucharistic celebration at the Hong Kong Coliseum marking the World Day for Missions. The celebration went under the banner of "God bless Hong Kong" and was a sign of the Church’s unity with the pope, who inaugurated the International Year of the Eucharist on October 17th.
In the homily of the ‘God Bless Hong Kong’ Solemn Mass, Monsignor Joseph Zen Ke-Kiun recalled how ‘mission and evangelization are rooted in the Eucharist.’…"

"…..I write this letter to you, brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, out of the conviction that everything that is for our good, beyond all the happiness that our present life affords is finally to be found only in this glorious Lord, our Good Shepherd. He is not only the end of our searching, but He is also our companion along the way. …"The year of the Eucharist will be a year of formation, explanation, and catechesis leading to a renewed awareness of ourselves as a Eucharistic people. To aid in our preparation, the Australian Catholic Bishops will issue a four-part discussion booklet and I will write further commentaries on important Church documents for Catholic Outlook. During the year, you will be invited to participate in a variety of eucharistic devotions at diocesan and at parish level.
In this article, I invite you to consider how you can launch yourself into the Year of the Eucharist and I offer a practical suggestion: prayerful reflection on the wonderful teaching of the Eucharist, the mystery of faith.
Holy Scriptures
Where better to begin than with the Holy Scriptures, and then consider a few points from St Thomas Aquinas, theologian and Saint, and a Doctor of the Church.
Why not start with the Gospel of St John, Chapter Six, in which Jesus proclaims: "I am the Bread of Life". You could use the Lectio Divina method, either alone or in a group. You can do this at home or in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
Slowly read the chapter in sections; then take a section at a time, again reading slowly. Pause and think about what you have read. If any phrase strikes you, then repeat it quietly a couple of times. Sit and reflect on the phrase, asking our Eucharistic Lord to deepen your understanding and love.
It may take you quite a few sessions to get through the whole Chapter. Then you could go to Chapter 17 of St John’s Gospel, the priestly prayer of Jesus before going to the Garden of Gethsemane.
If you are faithful to this prayer, or indeed any prayer that is centred on the Eucharist, I am sure that you will become aware of a hankering in your heart to spend time with the Eucharistic Lord, something that will spill over into the rest of your life and your dealings with other people…."
