American theologian named Undersecretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
Dominican Father Augustine DiNoia, former Executive Director of the Committees on Doctrine and Pastoral Practice for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, was appointed undersecretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by Pope John Paul II. The appointment, announced April 8, is effective immediately. The post is third highest in rank at the Congregation.
Father DiNoia, who was director of the Intercultural Forum for Studies in Faith and Culture at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. at the time of his appointment, has been a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the International Theological Commission, and is editor of The Thomist, a Dominican scholarly quarterly .
He is also professor of theology at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, and an adjunct professor at Saint Joseph Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, New York.
Father DiNoia served as theologian to Cardinal Jan Schotte, secretary-general of the 10th Assembly of the Synod of Bishops held last year in Rome.
A native of New York (born July 10, 1943), he joined the Order of Preachers in 1964, and was ordained in 1970. He received his licentiate in theology at the Dominican House of Studies, and holds a doctorate in philosophy from Yale University.
