Bishop assails Holy See’s Instruction in America, NCR

In an essay published in both the National Catholic Reporter (November 2) and America magazine (October 22), Bishop Donald Trautman of Erie sharply criticized Liturgiam authenticam, the Fifth Instruction on the Right Implementation of the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Liturgy.

Bishop Trautman, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Doctrine and a member and former chairman of the Committee on the Liturgy, had complained earlier in America (March 4, 2000) about the Holy See’s intervention in the matter of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy. This essay occasioned a response (May 13, 2000) by Cardinal Medina Estévez, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship

In his most recent essays Bishop Trautman called the new Instruction on translation "flawed", and criticized the Holy See’s action, which he considers an unwarranted intrusion into the affairs of bishops.
