Cardinal Avery Dulles, S.J. (1918-2008) converted to the Catholic faith in 1940. He was a Harvard graduate and veteran of the United States Navy. Ordained a priest in the Society of Jesus in 1956, Cardinal Dulles taught in numerous colleges and authored 750 articles and 23 books, including Modes of the Church (1974). He was named Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001.
