Professional musicians, parish choir members, priests, deacons, seminarians and others interested in learning more about sacred music in Catholic worship have two opportunities to take part in extended workshops on the art of chant in June.
On June 10-12, Holy Family Parish, Dayton, OH, is offering a Gregorian Chant Intensive at Holy Family Catholic Church, Dayton. The following week, June 20-25, the Church Music Association of America (CMAA) is hosting its 26th Colloquium in St. Louis, MO.
Holy Family Parish Intensive
The Dayton event welcomes Dr. Edward Schaefer, professor of music at the University of Florida, to host a three-day workshop on the basics of chant semiology with applications in several liturgical settings.
A well-known chant expert, author and translator of books on Church music, Schaefer is a frequent presenter at the CMAA’s colloquium. Serving as schola director for the Latin Mass in the Gainesville, Florida, area, Schaefer is a permanent deacon in the Church.
Dr. Schaefer’s research is focused on Gregorian chant and the music of the Roman Catholic Mass. In October of 2005 he spoke to the annual convention of the Catholic Medical Association on the topic of music and spiritual formation.
Holy Family Schola Director John Schauble said that “the Intensive is structured to be meaningful to all those who are interested in chant, regardless of whether they are new to chant or more experienced.” Participants may sign up for single events or bundles so that attendees’ schedule limitations allow them as much involvement as possible.
To register, call John Schauble at 513- 405-5094.
