The Jesse Tree Altarpiece — St. Anne’s Chapel of Burgos Cathedral in Castile and León, Spain.
The Jesse Tree image, based on Isaiah 11:1, is a symbolic representation not only of the genealogy of Christ, but also of the true Tree of Life or Salvation. This image began to appear in churches in the 12th and 13th centuries. The figure of Jesse, father of David, is reclining, and from his side the roots of the tree emerge. The ancestors of Jesus of the House of David are entwined in the branches, and Jesus appears at the top, as the blossom and fruit of the tree. In the Burgos Jesse Tree, the large figures directly above the sleeping Jesse are Saints Joachim and Anna, parents of the Virgin Mary, and at the top is the Blessed Mother with the Infant Jesus, flanked by symbolic figures of the Church (with chalice and staff) and the Synagogue (blindfolded, with broken staff and Tablets). — This elaborate gilded and painted retablo is by Gil de Siloé and Diego de la Cruz, ca 1487.
