The Foundations of Liturgical ReformSacrosanctum Concilium Anniversary Address — By Francis Cardinal George — In observance of the anniversary of Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Liturgy, a day-long conference sponsored by the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments (CDW) was held at the Vatican on December 4, 2003.

Cardinal Francis George of Chicago gave the initial address at the conference. Cardinal George, who heads the US Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy, is a member of the CDW and is US representative to the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, which provides English-language liturgical texts. His address, which focuses on the philosophical background and foundation of the post-conciliar liturgical reform, is reprinted here with the cardinal’s kind permission. Vol. X, No. 1 — March 2004
