Book Review

Heavenly City: The Architectural Tradition of Catholic Chicago.

Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 2005. Hardcover, 160 pages. Illustrated. Price: $59.95

A handsome new book on Catholic church buildings in Chicago has been published by Denis McNamara, Assistant Director of the Liturgical Institute at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Chicago, and British architectural photographer James Morris. The book focuses on sixty of Chicago’s most historic Catholic churches, both as examples of architectural movements that inspired church building of the era, and as sacramental images of the Heavenly City of Jerusalem.

It is copiously illustrated by more than 200 color photographs by Mr. Morris, whose work also appears in Churches of London (2000, Contemporary Books), and has been exhibited in Europe and the United States.

Dr. McNamara, who has contributed articles to the Adoremus Bulletin and is a liturgical and architectural design consultant, received his Ph.D. in architectural history from the University of Virginia, and specializes in the history of 19th- and 20th-century church buildings. He is the former assistant director of development for the Angelicum, Rome, and is a member of the Society of Architectural Historians, the Society for Catholic Liturgy, and the Institute for Classical Architecture.
