Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Juan Martín Cabezalero (1633-1673)
Oil on canvas - 1665-70, Museo del Prado, Madrid.
Juan Martín Cabezalero was active during the reign of Charles II of Spain, and was influenced by Anthony Van Dyke, the Flemish artist renowned as the portrait artist to the English court.
This painting depicts ten of the apostles, some mostly hidden, gazing into the empty tomb of the Virgin Mary. One of them (lower left) is casting roses into her tomb. Only one, Peter (center left, in shadow), has as yet noticed that Mary is being borne heavenward by angels and he gestures to call attention to the amazing event of her assumption into heaven. Unlike her Son, the Blessed Virgin does not ascend to heaven by her own power, but is carried aloft by angels.

Almighty ever-living God, who assumed the
Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son, body and soul into heavenly glory,
Grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above, we may merit to be sharers of her glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
